Sugar beet

Sugar beet

The ESA Working Group Sugar Beet (WG SBE) addresses sugar beet as regulated by the EU Seed Marketing Directive for beet seed (2002/54).

The EU is the world’s leading producer of sugar beet, with around 50% of the total. The EU 28 produces on average close to 20 million tonnes of white sugar per year, from around 2 million hectares. Sugar beet seed is produced on approximately 9000 hectares, mostly in France and Italy.

Sugar produced from sugar beets is used for human consumption and bioenergy.

The WG SBE is developing a factsheet on sugar beet which will contain more information on key production figures, research and development, environmental aspects as well as information on the ESA company members active in this crop.
